Software of Excellence

SOE is a leading global developer of software for the dental profession. More than 5,000 sites worldwide use its software, with SOE generating most of its income from its market-leading position in the UK.

SOE was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 2000 at NZ$1.00 per share. Our investor group became SOE’s cornerstone investor in July 2004 and after an intensive restructuring and turnaround process, we sold the company at NZ$2.90 per share in a public takeover in October 2007 to NASDAQ-listed Henry Schein, Inc. The investment yielded a 57% ungeared IRR and 2.2x money.

travel.com.au Limited operated the widely recognised travel.com.au and lastminute.com.au online travel brands in Australia and New Zealand. The parent company TVL listed on the ASX in 1999 at $1.25 per share. After a series of earnings disappointments, its shares slumped to $0.08 by mid-2003. We invested in TVL with a view to turning it around and selling it into an industry consolidation. We became TVL’s major shareholder, chaired and ran it and after an intensive restructuring, recapitalisation and turnaround process, sold the company in January 2008 at $0.57 per share to ASX-listed online accommodation provider Wotif.com Holdings Limited in a contested public takeover. The investment yielded an 85% ungeared IRR and returned 3.5x money.
